When one is being a creative, there is not right or wrong way of doing it. It’s what you decide to make of it. I think life should be taking in this exact context. Letting it be free with how you wish to take it as long as it gets to its destinations.

Every painting starts with a stroke

Laura Hernandez: UX/UI Designer – Illustrator

Changing the World One Design at a Time

I am Laura, a UX/UI designer whose aim is to improve user experience through branding and user interface design. Something I truly enjoy is the artistic aspect of communicating through the visual elements of design to improve the user experience. For this reason, I decided to immerse myself in the creative side of design.

Background

Formerly I worked as System Designer and in Project Management. As a System Designer, I wrote functional requirements from different partners and interpreted them into design proposals. As for Project Management, I acted as technical contact and coordinator between development and product management teams.

An overview of who I am, and who I aspire to be

When I came into graphic and web design at John Abbott College, I knew one thing for sure; I was going to work for Vogue one day. Magazine layout design is what I was made for. And then in my second year at Abbott, I had a photography class and the lines became blurred.

“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”

Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

Now, I absolutely love photography and post-processing. I’m underdeveloped, but I want to grow and learn. I want to gain creativity and individuality all while keeping up with current trends and staying relevant. I like to work with people who are in that same mindset or who can help me figure it all out.

Roxanne Lyristis: The Foreign Freelancer

The allure of the vast world, and the exploration of it, is what pulls at the strings of my soul. All the cultures there are to learn from and be immersed in, all the waters that will kiss my toes at their shorelines, all the sunsets there are to view from the peaks of the mountains I’ve climbed, every towering building in the rushing city streets I may wander down, and all the languages I can try to twist my tongue into speaking– has always lit a fire in me.

HOW CAN I APPEASE MY INTREPID SOUL WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BUILDING MY CAREER?

No matter where I may find myself in the belly of the planet, my skills, knowledge and experience in content creation will allow me to provide businesses and individuals with professional design services that will grow or strengthen their brands and online presence. Since remote workers and online work opportunities are growing in popularity, I can connect and work with clients and/or colleagues via my laptop, wherever my wild heart may reside in that moment.

SO, WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR IN A STAGE?

Currently, I am a full-time student eager to learn different skills in order to improve my experience and self confidence in the graphic and web design business. In a work environment, I am reliable, respectful, honest, and of course, I have an amazing sense of humour. I love to bring positivity in any room, because I believe that every moment in one’s life should be filled with happiness and should be productive.    I also am extremely understanding and retain information with ease. Also, I would like to mention that I am not perfect.  I am clumsy and often learn what not to do through trial and error. However, these errors are what make me gain the experience that allow me to say that I determined and persistent in this work domain.

Going behind the scenes

My goal is to go into a university like Concordia in computer science. After taking the first 3 classes of computer science in our program this semester made me realize how little I actually understand about a website. Exploring the back end of a website will have several advantages. The biggest one is being able to use these skills to troubleshoot any back-end problems when designing a website. I’ll also be able to help both sides of the website project if necessary. I find that I am more of a technical type of person. Things like web designing, photography and video editing are things that appeal more to me in the design world. This is why I like to lean my career towards this side of the industry.

Anastasia Wright: Eager and Willing Designer Extraordinaire

If There was an Award for the Most Indecisive Person

Graphic design wasn’t an immediate choice for me when considering options to study, however, I did know that I wanted to utilize my creativity in some way. I considered traditional media, like drawing, painting, etc, but there’s always the question of stability. Yes, it would be fulfilling creatively, but as a perfectionist I couldn’t see myself thriving longterm.

Design started to make a lot of sense. Finding a balance between joy and practicality is my goal in life regarding many aspects, so this fell in line with that quite easily. With that being said; here I am.
