“People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built. ” –Eleanor Roosevelt

When I was little, people would ask me what I wanted to be when grew up. Most of the time, I would say something unrealistic, like a princess, and other times I would say that I did not know. It had never been a problem because growing up was so far away. Once I reached high school, the question became more significant but still unanswered. Although I was unable to decide, I knew my passions and skills which drove me to apply in Graphic and Web Design at John Abbott College.

During my years studying in this program, I have explored many sub-divisions, but only one answered the abiding question; what do you want to be when you grow up? It finally became clear to me that I was going to pursue a career in Illustration.

Hi, I am Nouraldeen Aladhamy, and I am a dedicated photographer and person who is creating video montage. I plan to intern for a photographer in his studio. I’ve been interested in video montage and photography since I was 12 years old. I would take a couple of pictures, combine them in a video to make a slideshow and share it on YouTube. When I was 20, I went out to experience the real world and take a couple of pictures to share them on my Instagram to make a portfolio. I love retouching pictures, editing and make photo manipulation. I am looking for a photographer to host me to retouch their photos and/or help out with their clients. I am passionate about photography, whenever and wherever I go, I always make sure to have my camera with me to capture the beauty of the world. As well as meet new people as clients or models to have their pictures taken for certain purposes.

Vector Self-Portrait, © Nich Guilbault 2019

My name is Nich Guilbault, and I’m a dedicated designer and illustrator with an interest in classical animation. Having grown up on animated films like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, I’m passionate about visual storytelling and storyboarding.

I find the use of expressive movements, body language and composition to communicate complex ideas fascinating, and I carry this appreciation over into all of my design work. Likewise, I strive to ensure that all aspects of my print or web design pieces express a unified “story” or idea.

The Unknown

Trying to figure out what path to follow is never an easy task. It forces you to explore the depths of your mind and evaluate where you want to be in the years to come. For some people, the decision is simple: they know exactly where they want to be and want can take them there. However others, myself included, are still asking the classic childhood question “What do I want to be when I grow up?” And maybe that’s not such a bad thing. After all, the unknown is your tool.

“The Plan”

Recently I have found myself divided by the world of Graphic Design and Computer Science. In the next 6 months, I have set goals that I am going to accomplish. These goals are divided by four phases.

  1. I would like to explore the world of web and databases in my final semester at John Abbott College in Graphic and Web Design.
  2. Finding a stage dealing with front-end web design.
  3. Finding employment for the summer in that field. Whether it be at my stage placement or elsewhere, I believe hands-on experience is something you cannot learn in school.
  4. Continuing my studies either here in Montreal, or out of province.

Understanding networking for web designers

When learning to become a web designer, it is critical to understand how networking works since so many different parts come together to make a web site work.

When a web site goes down, it can be anyone of the different parts that has failed. Being able to pinpoint that part, and who is responsible for it is key to getting the web site back up and running again quickly.

Internet and WWW aren’t the same thing

First of all, let’s get one thing straight. The internet and the World Wide Web are not the same thing.

The internet is a series of interconnected networks. It is a network of networks built of of private, public, academic, business, and government networks.

What is Semantic HTML?

Semantic HTML is the use of HTML markup to reinforce the semantics, or meaning, of the information in webpages and web applications rather than merely to define its presentation or look. Semantic HTML is processed by traditional web browsers as well as by many other user agents. CSS is used to suggest its presentation to human users.

For web design students, there are many career option when considering the universe of the World Wide Web. Front-end development, back-end development, front-end design… the options are many.

For those who wish to do more than only the visual layout of screens using tools like Sketch, the Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (and so many others) there is one constant: writing good HTML.

Not all HTML is created equal

However, there is a distinction to be made. Not all HTML performs the equally in terms of search engine optimization, and not all HTML is easy for people to read.

Batch creating a list of folders using the Terminal

Batch creating folders with the terminal is easy and efficient.

Here’s a quick tip for anyone needing to create a large set of folders. This is often required when building the hierarchy of a large web site, or just for organizing the filesystem on your computer.

For example, in Graphic & Web Design we have the end-of-program comprehensive assessment. This is what the list of items required for the assessment looks like:
