The present
As I am completing my final year in Graphic and Web Design at John Abbott College, a lot of decisions are to be made. I need to decide between going to university or simply to start working in the field. I choose to continue my studies to university in marketing. For now, I am focusing on completing my portfolio which will be important to present to stage hosts as well as for the upcoming 2019 vernissage.

The Beginning
I decided to go into the Graphic and Web design program at John Abbott college because being creative has always been something I enjoyed. When I was younger I liked to draw often even if I wasn’t Picasso it was cool to let my imagination run wild. Now that i’m older I don’t have as much time to draw but I still find myself being creative whenever i have the time. Taking pictures and editing them in aesthetically pleasing ways is something enjoy doing. I like Drawing, both traditionally and digitally when I have the time. I love listening to music and appreciate everything artistic about it from the album art, music videos, photo-shoots and merchandise/ logos… etc.

Building the Foundation
Growing up, Web design, Photography or Illustrator was a foreign thing to my simple underdeveloped mind. But, I loved using tech. Often, I took apart old broken laptops to see how they worked and put them back together for fun. I always had a thing for anything computer related and knew I was going to pursue work where I’m surrounded by what I love.
One day, I was introduced to GIMP & Sony Vegas meant for school projects. I was surprised by the fun I was having creating god awful pictures and videos for class projects and friends. However, my adolescent self didn’t care to respect the continuity of design. I let my imagination compile these horrible pictures because it was fun. The majority of my creations were mainly for laughs.

My name is Eric Lachance and I have been learning graphic design for the last few years. I am looking for some experience although I intend to continue my education in the field of animation next year. During my studies, I have excelled and greatly enjoyed the design and technical parts of my field. I have done a lot of different work which challenged me but helped me learn a great variety of skills. In my program, I was taught to use numerous programs efficiently. The only thing I don’t enjoy as much is making websites despite being capable of doing so.

When I was little, people would ask me what I wanted to be when grew up. Most of the time, I would say something unrealistic, like a princess, and other times I would say that I did not know. It had never been a problem because growing up was so far away. Once I reached high school, the question became more significant but still unanswered. Although I was unable to decide, I knew my passions and skills which drove me to apply in Graphic and Web Design at John Abbott College.
During my years studying in this program, I have explored many sub-divisions, but only one answered the abiding question; what do you want to be when you grow up? It finally became clear to me that I was going to pursue a career in Illustration.

The inspiration behind the Ambition
Hi, I am Nouraldeen Aladhamy, and I am a dedicated photographer and person who is creating video montage. I plan to intern for a photographer in his studio. I’ve been interested in video montage and photography since I was 12 years old. I would take a couple of pictures, combine them in a video to make a slideshow and share it on YouTube. When I was 20, I went out to experience the real world and take a couple of pictures to share them on my Instagram to make a portfolio. I love retouching pictures, editing and make photo manipulation. I am looking for a photographer to host me to retouch their photos and/or help out with their clients. I am passionate about photography, whenever and wherever I go, I always make sure to have my camera with me to capture the beauty of the world. As well as meet new people as clients or models to have their pictures taken for certain purposes.
Nich Guilbault: Designer & Illustrator Seeking Experience
My name is Nich Guilbault, and I’m a dedicated designer and illustrator with an interest in classical animation. Having grown up on animated films like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, I’m passionate about visual storytelling and storyboarding.
I find the use of expressive movements, body language and composition to communicate complex ideas fascinating, and I carry this appreciation over into all of my design work. Likewise, I strive to ensure that all aspects of my print or web design pieces express a unified “story” or idea.

The Unknown
Trying to figure out what path to follow is never an easy task. It forces you to explore the depths of your mind and evaluate where you want to be in the years to come. For some people, the decision is simple: they know exactly where they want to be and want can take them there. However others, myself included, are still asking the classic childhood question “What do I want to be when I grow up?” And maybe that’s not such a bad thing. After all, the unknown is your tool.

“The Plan”
Recently I have found myself divided by the world of Graphic Design and Computer Science. In the next 6 months, I have set goals that I am going to accomplish. These goals are divided by four phases.
- I would like to explore the world of web and databases in my final semester at John Abbott College in Graphic and Web Design.
- Finding a stage dealing with front-end web design.
- Finding employment for the summer in that field. Whether it be at my stage placement or elsewhere, I believe hands-on experience is something you cannot learn in school.
- Continuing my studies either here in Montreal, or out of province.
